The Government gets their grubbyđź‘‹ in AI

Welcome back friends and new AI enthusiasts to ChildsPlayAI, a weekly newsletter where we break down what’s happening in AI, in language you can understand.

For today, we’ll be showing even the faint of heart how to use AI, as well as diving into how the government wants to get its share.

Let’s dig in!

Just try it!

In March, a Pew Research study found that 58% of US adults have heard of ChatGPT, but only 14% had actually used it. With only a small percentage even using this simple chat tool, there is an increasing gap between those who use AI to get ahead and those who don’t even know where to start.

Regardless of your larger concerns around AI, there are undoubtedly tons of great uses for it available. Let’s take a look at some simple tools to try out AI. You may be surprised at how useful and efficient these can be!

  • WonsultingAI : Create more engaging resumes and help in your job search by increasing your networking skills.

  • SymptomCheckerAI: Tired of scrolling through WebMD? This tool will help in narrowing down your possible ailments much quicker.

  • QuizGecko: Are you a teacher or need to enable a team faster? Create instant quizzes based on current content. It’s simple to use and has built-in grading and reporting.

These are just a small sampling of what’s available out there. We encourage you to try out at least one and let us know how it goes. Remember, we’re in this together, and always happy to help you along the way.

Who should regulate AI? And how?

With even the creator of ChatGPT calling for AI regulation, we can all agree we don’t want the robots taking over the world. But creating and maintaining these regulations may be one the most challenging and high-stakes goals we’ve seen in recent history. Let’s take a look at some of the considerations.

  • The balance between innovation and regulation. There is a tension between the need to regulate AI to protect against potential harms, and the need to allow for innovation in this rapidly developing field. Privacy invasion, biases, and lack of transparency can create real challenges to the legitimacy of AI. But on the other hand, incredible advancements in areas such as heart disease and cancer research make it impossible to ignore the benefits that could come.

  • The role of government. There is disagreement about the appropriate role of government in regulating AI. Some policymakers are concerned that too much regulation could stifle innovation, while others believe that it is necessary to protect against potential risks. Regardless of where a party may stand on this issue, there is bi-partisan support for the US to stay ahead of this race. Complications here arise due to this tech spanning across trade agreements, networks, energy, transportation, and so on.

  • The international dimension. AI is a global technology, and there is a need for international cooperation on regulation. However, there is no international consensus on how to regulate AI, and different countries are taking different approaches.

  • The ethical implications of AI. AI raises several ethical questions, such as the use of AI in warfare, the implications of AI for human autonomy, and the potential for AI to become sentient.

These are just some of the current considerations in AI regulation. The field is rapidly evolving, and the debate over regulation is likely to continue for many years to come. Policymakers and private companies alike will need to consider these ethical implications when developing regulations for AI.
